Creating a Custom Master Template by Copying a Client File (Desktop)
What it is: A method to turn a fully configured existing client file into a reusable custom framework template, so that future client files can be created with your firm's preferred settings and customisations already in place.
What it's for
When a firm has invested time customising the layout, notes, and settings of a client file, this process preserves that work as a template. New client files created from the custom framework start with all the customisations already applied, saving setup time and ensuring consistency across engagements.
This process is done outside Draftworx (in Windows File Explorer) and requires the Manager Password.
How to do it
- In Draftworx, select the Information button on the Client List to note the location of the client files and the templates folder. Then close Draftworx.
- In Windows File Explorer, navigate to the Clients folder and find the framework subfolder that matches the client file to be copied.
- Locate the client file, and copy it.
- Navigate to the Templates folder (the default location is shown on the information screen).
- Open the Frameworks subfolder and paste the copied client file there.
- Rename the pasted file to something that identifies it as your custom template.
- Reopen Draftworx and log in with the Manager Password.
- On the Client List, navigate to Frameworks and open the newly pasted custom framework.
- Go to the Working Trial Balance and use Clear Trial Balance for all years, so the template contains no client-specific figures.
- The custom framework is now available. When creating a new client file, select it from the Framework dropdown.
